H.A.U.L Helluv an Ugly Load
For those who are interested in good ol' Jirper Lore,
Here is our hauling story of August 10, 1994.
A wondrous idea entered our heads,
To haul across the snow swamp two 400 pound sleds.
At first the task was approached with glee,
Scott said: "This one for you and that one for me".
The smooth solid ice soon turned to ridges and troughs,
But there was no turning back as the sweat dripped from our brows.
We cut to the left, we cut to the right,
Still the snow swamp stretched far out of sight.
We all started swearing and some of us bled,
As the sleds shifted, bounced, rolled over and played dead.
"Camp 26 is right there, just behind that nunatak",
Exclaimed Don with enthusiasm the rest of us lacked.
Alas, we paused as Don took a reconnaissance trip,
We watched him from a distance as he stepped into a six foot dip.
"Over the ditches and it's smooth sailing from there",
Said Don with ambition and vertical hair.
There was a moment of silence, the air became tense,
Then, all of a sudden, we discovered common sense.
After this three hour drag it was late in the day,
A glance to the North showed we were only half way.
"Abandon the sleds" came a cry from within,
Our stomachs were empty, our patience grown thin.
From this short tale, one moral should be clear,
Over crevasses and snow swamps never manhaul gear!
